I know many people in the design community (including me) are sick and tired of seeing and hearing about the virtues of bamboo and chinoiserie-inspired furnishings, like Chinese Chippendale chairs…
But, hell, it’s just so easy to revive an otherwise plain-jane or country kitchen space with the tiny injection of chinoiserie chair. They did WONDERS for the dining space at the holiday show house I decorated this Christmas in Concord.
They have never and will never go out of fashion. Easy to lacquer or paint a bold color, these shapes have a simple geometry to them that instantly creates architectural interest with its open fret worked pattern. So Bamboo-zle yourself if things are getting a little boring or tired…

Love bamboo chairs! They are always a staple in my house
I love the pairing of a chinoisierie chair with an unexpected table. The concord holiday home is beautiful!!
Anything lacquered right now,, sign me up! Those black and red chairs are gorg
Serendipity! Believe it or not,…I was at my local vintage swap shop last weekend and came across two amazing bamboo arm chairs…. I had no idea what to do with them until I clicked on your Christmas showhouse pictures…. I had never thought to swap out just the chairs at the 2 ends of my dining table! I will snap a picture once I have lacquered them in blue and send them to you… Now if only I can find a good fabric for the seat cushions…
Do you have any tips on where to buy or how to find a set while antique shopping?
@Liz, I just bought 2 from ballard designs which seemed like the best bang for my buck and best quality, I have spotted a few here and there at home goods but very inferior quality. http://www.ballarddesigns.com/macau-side-chairs-set-of-2/chairs/dining-chairs/14867
Hope this helps, I’m sure Katie will have some input too but it’s too funny this was just blogged about, I bought the chairs to dress up my house before the holidays…
xoxoxo Petra
ps i got them in Black!
How about a post that combines tables and chairs… *Katie style*
Eclecticism is different language for me…
Love it! I have moved 4 times since I got married many (many) years ago. No matter what the style of the home dictated, I always had Chinese Chippendale chairs, A pagoda lamp, and Oriental themed wallcoverings somewhere in my house! To this day, they are still my favorite pieces!
How about it. Sure I will do a table and chairs post, why not. For kitchen or Dining?…
I can do both spread out.
Yes, Asian anything lends itself to being combined in any design genre, that’s why it’s such a favorite of designers.
Happy New Year everyone!
LOVE these photos — everything is gorgeous! I’ll never tire of Chinese Chippendale.
