Spring is here and what a season it is for color. Neons everywhere trending, color “pops”– I am no fashion expert, but it has me in the mood to go wild and crazy with my work. I am in the middle of developing some great color palettes for a new client who shares my love of crazy color, so I thought I would put some of my initial concepts for bedrooms out there for you to see.
The household consists of mostly girls—they have lived overseas and love bright strong color. The way I usually approach my projects is to start with textiles and let that lead my way. The major pattern is typically (but not always) my suggestion for window treatments. Of course, I have room/furniture plans drawn and a basic grasp of the furniture pieces, shapes and sizes, but this is really where the room gets born in my eyes– and certainly where I see clients getting excited.
These color stories are not shrinking violets (no pun intended, as there is major use of purple)– so I thought I would show you one room concept at a time and let you take it in.

I see this as young and fresh. For a teenager. Blues, purples and silvers all combined in a soothing but very much alive color board. Hip, a bit boho, but not straying too far out there. What do you think?

purple rain was on vh1 the other night! sad to say I watched the whole thing
this story is gorg katie as usual. I see it working perfectly for a woman of any age!!
i am so into purple lately, my daughter would love this room too! what color bedroom furniture would go with?
Probably off white, maybe a mirrored piece, an upholstered bed, heavily textured carpet, grasscloth walls in pale almond or even palest blue or lavender.
so cute!
I like it! I can’t wait to design for a girl so I can use a beautiful floral. So far all of my clients have been dudes or ladies who hate florals. My day with come!!!
You are so good at the mis-match look. It goes so well together, any tips for selecting a color story? When to use solids or patterns?
Actually this is not mismatched at all; quite the opposite. It’s all textures and patterns in sane color family as the floral. May even be too matched. The end result will need a curve ball of some sort. Like a jolt of raspberry pink or turqouise.
love this! is that a denim swatch?
Noooo, no denim here! Linen, cotton, velvet and chenille
You have such a knack for creating the best stories! Can’t wait to see how this materializes into a room!
I love the bolder floral and that nubby grey/white fabric too – I could see this being the start of a girls room but would really give some longevity too which is great. I’m just getting started with my business but I often start with fabrics as well so good to read your advice too. I have a client meeting coming up and I’m excited to dive into the design and concept.
