I recently travelled to Landry & Arcari Rugs in Boston to explore options for the Holiday Show-house I am participating in on December 3rd to benefit the Concord Museum. As usual, I got distracted as we browsed their extensive collection; I saw things for various clients and of course, for myself.
What I went nuts for, though, is something that in my past life I would have NEVER been interested in, but now I have become mildly obsessed with: over-dyed rugs. Half traditional, half totally modern and vintage in nature, these wild saturated beauties bowled me over. These are (usually vintage) hand knotted rugs where the original dyes were removed and then they are literally over-dyed with rich solid color that bleeds into the weave and takes on a brave dimension throughout the pattern of the rug.
They would definitely be the star of a room, but in the right setting, with the right type of home, what a bold look. I could see an over-dyed rug in a modern home with minimalist furniture and accents or in a more transitional setting, but one thing is for sure, they are not for the faint-of-heart. They are available at many upscale rug dealers, ABC Carpet being a great resource as well. Would you dare?

See… I used to think this look appeared accidental. Like you tossed your oriental into the wash and the colours bled. Now that I understand it is an intentional look, Katie I love your suggestions on how to use this. Especially in a minimalist room.
i have been obsessed with overdyed rugs too every since I saw Anthropologie bring them back in a major way! U r so right they are always put with really simple furnishings and accessories are kept to a bare minumum. its all about the rug!
Ordinarily I do not think I would give these a second look. I’m very traditional when it comes to my rugs, but since you suggested it I will entertain the idea.. I like your thoughts for using them as a statement.
Happy Thanksgiving Katie Rosenfeld !
I find these to be really pretty, but I know some of my friends detest the look. It think its definitely one of those things you either love them or hate them…
First of all, WHO CARES about what other people think? There is no second of all:-)
Oh yes, love them! Love color!
so pretty katie, these are really fun! happy thanksgiving
Hi Katie I think over-dyed rugs are so pretty too! I also just nominated you on the designers conference hall of fame. Another blog I read pointed me over there, but I had to nominate yours instead.. shhh
happy thanksgiving!
wow, that’s a HUGE complement, given the fact that just 1 year ago in Jan, I started writing this blog, and attended that very conference in LA, nervous as hell and such a freshman.
Thanks for your visits and support.
Hugs,
KR
I love Landry & Arcari. Sometimes I go to look at rugs to furnish a make-believe room. I look forward to the day that I finish renovating so I can sink some good money into furnishings.
I like these rugs and agree they’re best suited to a modern minimal look. I’m not a big fan of the ones that are cut up and pieced back together like a quilt. A little too boho or hobo or whatever. That being said, I think they’re a fad and we’ll see hundreds of them at Building 19 next year. I’d rather a threadbare vintage model.
Okay, can you be my new friend and sidekick? You had me at Building 19…
One more thing, did I see you saw some of these at Bloomingdales. I mean, really???
Perhaps, I should reconsider my interest in them after all…
