I met a client last week who has enormous rooms to fill. Her family room, for starters, is one of the largest I have seen. In order to make the space feel cozy and utlitarian, it needs to be filled with large scale pieces, anchored by a large rug, and have the widows all treated with fabric to create a cozier feel.
When I mentioned a sectional she cringed. Thoughts that came to mind were: cheezy, dated, bachelor-padish. Not convinced, she begged me to “show her” some visuals where the trusty sectional looked great. If Martyn Lawrence Bullard can use one, then we all can… The sectional: 9 Ways:
1. Amber Lewis 2.Kyle Knight 3. Design Sponge 4.Martyn Lawrence Bullard 5. House of Turquoise 6. Martyn Lawrence Bullard 7. House Beautiful 8. Architectural Digest 9. Pinterest

This post rocks my world. I now have a solution to me and my husband’s dreaded comfy-couch war. We can get a sectional as long as it looks like one of these!
Katie,
What about using a single back to back sofa in lieu of a sectional. If you have the room it makes for very cozy conversation spaces. Or for more long-term flexibility, you could use two of the same sofas, back to back with a console table in between.
Thank for your always thoughtful posts!

Love this post. You have a great way of explaining this that make sense! Where might I find sofa sectionals that look this good??
This is such a good bit of information. Why is it that we all think of sectionals as being fugly?? I think bob’s discount furniture with the reclining section and remote/drink holders. Thank you for sharing your great design sense with us every day!!
I used to cringe at the word sectional too- but there are so many beautiful choices out there now!! I think its a great idea for a large space- I hope she agrees with you after seeing all these great ones!
I can’t wait to see the final room designed! Plz keep us updated on ur progress..
