I have a client who is hell bent on hiding his gigantic television behind doors. I think it’s over 50 inches. My feeling is: Why? The only solution to hiding a huge component like this is something custom or semi-custom, and it will look like the proverbial media wall, any which way you slice it. Not to mention it will cost a fortune to find one that is really great looking.
If a media center is the look you are after, fine. Some people dig it. But these guys actually don’t want that look, so we are in a quandary. My feeling is that there is no good reason to hide your TV. We all have them, we all use them, and we all love them. Isn’t that the case?
So, I personally would much rather see a gigunda TV mounted on a wall beneath a gorgeous case piece, credenza or console– or even perched on top of one– than inside some store bought media center which is a repository for space fillers like picture frames and other needless accessories that otherwise would not be displayed. We all know how I feel about clutter. Sometimes you need some storage for toys, DVD’s and components; I get that. But why do you need an entire wall full of it?
There are so many awesome options to place a television atop; surely there must be one for everyone… What do you think? Should the TV be hidden from view or it ok for it come out and play??? I LOVE this credenza like a third child (well, not really, but I do really love it) ; it is pricey but it is one of my all-time favorites:

I found this at a local shop; ready and waiting to be painted, stained or shellacked:

There is no reason a sideboard can’t double as a media console and this one is charming:

For a dressier look, perhaps something more deco-inspired:

If rustic is what you’re after, look no further:

This reminds me of something that Dick Van Dyke may have had in his house, and maybe that’s why I like it:

Yes, buy a TV that is as flat as possible, and hang it over a credenza with closed doors. Run the cords through the wall and hide all of the components in the credenza. I don’t mind seeing the TV on the wall, but I object strenuously to seeing a bunch of equipment or any cords, so we got one of those infra red sensors to attach to all of the components, and we hide the little eye among decorative pieces on top. In that way, nothing shows but the TV.
Well, as much as I love both you and your blog, I think I (sort of) disagree with you. If you’re putting the TV in the family room, embrace it! Hang that bad boy on the wall for all to see (only I agree with Ann T. – hide the wires) But in our house, which is old old old, there’s only living room, no additional “family room.” So I really wanted to be able to shut some sort of doors on the TV so that the living room could function as a social place that wasn’t dominated by media… Luckily for me, after LOTS of searching, I found something that looks enough like an armoire to satisfy me, and that’s where the TV lives.
On another note, I love the pieces of furniture you posted so much that I want them all – especially that green one and the deco one!

Love a TV on a wall – there’s something completely honest about it! (The first and last credenzas are my favorites!)
Thanks so much for coming by the store and featuring our console. I love not hiding our tv’s and being able to showcase beautiful furniture.
Why does every commenter’s name start with A? Isn’t that weird?
I agree with you, there’s no reason to hide a TV and I love some the credenza pieces you chose. I also agree with Ann Burr that in a house that’s old, old, old, there’s something I dislike about having a flat screen hanging on the wall. But I think that depends on the overall language of the furnishings.
I love these looks but I have a dilemma. We are mounting the tv on the bedroom wall however, there isn’t enough room underneath it to put a credenza or any kind of furniture. All the wiring is hidden behind the wall but we need a place to store the cable box etc. My husband is suggesting a shelf. Not sure how that will look. Seems a little messy to me. Any ideas?
Need to see a picture of this to understand…
I am in the market for a console so thanks for the ideas. I used to hide the tv but have learned that it is part of life these days so I embrace it on the wall or on top of a console but absolutely no cords!
