If I could count the number of times I have had inquiries about the pink multi-colored vintage Brunschwig-et-Fils fabric I used in one of my portfolio images, I would be a wealthy lady. From a 1960′s archive (and I was told part of a collection that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis herself commissioned from the fabric house), the Paule Marrot prints were briefly re-issued and then discontinued, due to a lack of interest. I am so lucky to have snagged extra yardage, it’s impossible to find these days. Infact, I pilfered extra memo samples knowing they would be good ones to keep…

But look what I found on Etsy and elsewhere: other prints from that same re-issue… Mod, retro, campy and French at the same time. If you like them, buy them. They are rare and very very cool.

I am on day 4 of being without power. No hot water, food, light, nothing. After schlepping to Target, Home Depot and Lowes in search of battery operated lanterns (of course they are sold out), I found myself in my loaner car (a whole other story) cursing in front of my daughter. It was at that moment, at that stop light that I looked to my right at the REI on the corner, and said to myself, “it’s worth one last shot”.

Once inside, I entered a strange universe of self sufficiency products I never knew existed. I guess they would be known as camping supplies… (not like I would know). Four flashlights that attach to the head, a battery operated iPhone charger and a new BFF (Chuck) later, it seems I am ready to go home for the night. Even if I am not the happiest camper….

Update: August 30, 2011

It’s hard to find inspiration in the dark. I was at the computer beginning to write when the lights went off early Sunday. It’s Monday at 9 pm, and I sit in my dark bedroom on my draining IPhone—with Trudie, the poodle on my bed and a battery operated lantern my friend brought over. The family is at a hotel, but they refused to take Trudie, and I don’t roll without my poodle, so here we are, another quiet night in the dark together.

I am not really thinking about the sort of things I write about each day in this blog, but more about how much the small things matter. Like being together, sharing a meal at home, snuggling in bed watching bad reality tv, and having showered and looking and smelling presentable. Sometimes darkness brings these things to light… I’ll be back as soon as I can. Thanks for being patient and checking in!

Well, this is my personal worst, and I’d say I am in pretty good shape, considering the scope of this hurricane’s wreckage. No power and a purple plum tree down. Could be worse. Thoughts go out to those who suffered more.

Be back online soon.

I had to drop health forms off at school today because I got a letter in the mail stating my daughter would not be allowed to attend school next week without them. They were due two weeks ago. Story of my life…

Anyway, walking into the school I was struck by the utter lack of decor in the place. The buildings themselves need help, and it’s too big of a project to even scratch the surface, but what about the rooms themselves?

I mean, we all know that schools have no budgets for this stuff, but classrooms are filled with ugly decor. Does it need to be ugly? Research proves that people thrive in visually stimulating environments. Can’t it be, well…. better looking? I went online in search of some classroom inspiration and here’s where I landed.

What must it be like to take a son off to college? So devastating, I imagine… As a mom, and a mom-of-girls, would I be compelled to over-decorate his dank depressing dorm room. But, would he allow it? Surely, I could never send him off—a strapping young lad—to become a man, with football team-themed pilled jersey sheets and an enormous Sponge Bob pillow. But, what to do?

I did some quick thinking and here’s what i came up with: I call it: “The Un-Decorated (slightly overdecorated) Masculine Dorm Design” Calling all Boy-Moms: Do you Approve? Oh, and about the antlers, let’s just say sometimes I eat my words—tweet-tweet!
