Home in the Sky

This downtown Boston penthouse was a design challenge for me. A large family was moving from a historic suburban home to an urban penthouse with glass walls, and my request was for a “warm family home”. No hotel lobby pieces or minimal modern furniture; they wanted it to feel like a “house” not necessarily a penthouse. That was a tall order, given the expanse of windows and limitation of not using drapery to obstruct the view. The kitchen was to be a clean take on an English scullery, but we painted it the most alluring blue gray to make it current. I recruited clean lined, but not overly modern furniture, contemporary lighting and a bevy of antique rugs and objects mixed in to create spaces that (hopefully) look and feel collected, not cluttered, and most of all warm and comfortable.
