I arrived in NY tonight and sat outside Penn Station waiting for a cab for half an hour. Little did I know I was headed for Hipster Heaven—the Ace Hotel. Not since living on the west coast have I encountered so much dark denim, plaid and piercings in one place.
Meet my bellman, Corey. When pressed, he confided in me that his inspiration for his hair-do was Deb from the cult movie and one of my favorites: Napoleon Dynamite. But, lets move on to the design and decor which is a cross between 1930′s vintage NY and an uber retro-cool Thomas O’Brien aesthetic. Hence the cool lamps at the reception desk, penny tile floors, beat up leather, and plaid upholstery in the lounge.
At the front desk: Let’s discuss the crusty vintage desk lamps with aged green paint; can we say perfect? The penny tile floors in the lobby are amazing, very 1930s. My room is a study in Spartan retro chic; industrial lamps, plaid blanket, and a black sheepskin rug casually strewn on a saddle-colored Jean-Michel Frank style sofa. If you are accustomed to a Ritz walk the other way… Notice the dark grouted subway tiles in my bathroom and burnished brass fittings: all very retro. Take a look at the HUGE canvas in my room: What else needs to be said about that?! I mean, how much cool can a girl take?!

I am off to another blog-fest (for the record, I did not give it the name “fest”—), and this time, it looks like it’s going to be another great one. Sponsored by one of my “go-to” houses, Kravet-Lee Jofa, I am curious to learn more about this crazy wired world I find myself living in these days. Looking forward to re-connecting with new blogger friends, and experiencing the second design blog conference ever.
I am even more excited to see old friends and haunts, and to soak up some of the crazy city energy I used to live in. There’s nothing like it…
Jeffrey Shoes: Oh, please Julie, don’t make go! If you force me, I will spend all I have on shoes, and Doug will divorce me! I WILL also get lost in both ABC Carpet and Aero Studios for many many hours… And downtown, I will not likely run into any housewives, although I sure I hope I do!
Why do most of my memories of New York (or anywhere, really) revolve around food? I am planning on stuffing my face the whole time. With my sister in tow, I will surely consume cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery every day I’m there. My kids love Dylans, but I date back to the “World of Nuts” candy store chains—the infamous scene of me biting into a giant gummy bear and losing three teeth into my hand.
When you live in NY you are either an “Essa Bagel” person or an “H&H” person. Which am I? I can taste the cheezy spicy corn now; a true favorite at Cafe Habana. And no trip to NYC will be complete without dinner at The Standard with my little sister and my two delicious nieces.
I’ll be back home next week, but for now, wish me safe travels!
